The Copperheads (6-25) lost against the Michigan Monarchs (10-19) to open up the three game series.
The Copperheads finished with five runs, eight hits and zero errors. The Monarchs had nine runs, 15 hits and one error.
Logan Martin (#39) started on the mound for the Cheads. He had two strikeouts, six earned runs, seven hits and one walk in three innings pitched.
At the top of the second, the Monarchs scored four runs to bring them up 4-0.
In the top of the third, the Monarchs continued what they started in the second, scoring two more runs, bringing the score to 6-0.
To start the top of the fourth, Jackson Dempsey (#9) came into pitch for Martin.
After an inning of no scores, the Monarchs started the scoring again with one run to bring them up seven in the top of the fifth.
The Cheads got it started during the bottom of the fifth. Wyatt Fether (#4) led off and got a single, which was followed by another single by Easton Nuzum (#12). Eli Mandler (#26) loaded the bases up with another single. Fether scored the first run for the Copperheads off a wild pitch, cutting into the deficit. Zach Reeder (#2) hit a grounder to second, grabbing his first RBI of the game to bring the score to 2-0. Brady Kaufman (#25) reached first on a fielder's choice, with Mandler called out at home. Fox Spears (#19) doubled to right field, scoring Kaufman, bringing the score to 7-3.
Nate Silvus (#1) replaced Jayden Kennedy (#6) defensively in the top of the sixth.
During the top of the eighth, Alex Noe (#40) came into pitch for Dempsey. The Monarchs capitalized on the change, hitting a two run home run, upping the score to 9-3.
The top of the ninth brought a new pitcher into the game for the Cheads, Jacob Ruiz (#7).
The Cheads tried to mount a comeback during the bottom of the ninth, Fether and Nuzum were both hit by pitch, giving them to first and second. Reeder singled, scoring both of them to bring the score to 9-5.
The comeback would be unsuccessful, with the final for the game being 9-5.
Zach Reeder was the Wings Over Player of the Game. He had one hit and three RBIs.

Established in 2002, the Copperheads is a summer collegiate wooden bat baseball team that competes in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and plays its home games at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, OH. The Copperheads organization strives to provide the most affordable means of family-friendly outdoor entertainment in southeast Ohio. Tickets to the Copperheads games are $5 and children under the age of 5 receive free admission. Staffed by Ohio University students, the Southern Ohio Copperheads also serve as a “learning lab” for student interns looking to work in the sport and entertainment industry.
