The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (GLSCL) and the Southern Ohio Copperheads team provide an excellent opportunity for talented collegiate players to sharpen their skills, increase exposure to scouts, bond with a team, and have a fun, fulfilling summer.

What sets the Southern Ohio Copperheads apart is a player-first culture built on true community support, meaningful development, and a summer baseball experience that feels both competitive and genuinely enjoyable. Unlike many collegiate teams where pressure can overshadow growth, the Copperheads provide high-level competition within an environment designed to help athletes experiment, improve, and showcase their talents. Players are welcomed into a close-knit Athens baseball family supported by dedicated coaches, staff, and fans who make every game feel personal. The result is a team culture defined by connection, opportunity, and the freedom for players to take the next step in their game while having a memorable, rewarding summer both on and off the field.
The player experience is designed to provide players the opportunity to compete at a higher level and prepare for entering professional baseball. The team operates similarly to minor league teams—playing nightly in stadiums full of fans, using wood bats and other minor league specification equipment, and road tripping between games. More than 50 team alumni have been drafted to major league teams. Our coaches are dedicated to your evolution as a ball player.
The GLSC League’s all-star game is regularly attended by dozens of MLB scouts. The league is also partially funded by the MLB and shares stats with the MLB scouting bureau through online systems. Games are streamed on radio and video broadcasts. The team markets itself through various social and traditional media.
The Copperheads’ summer experience is defined by a strong team culture, consistent support, and meaningful community connections. Players form lasting bonds through games and the daily rhythm of competing and improving together. Athens provides an engaging backdrop, offering easy access to local food, recreation, and a welcoming college-town atmosphere. Community events and a loyal fanbase give players a sense of belonging beyond the field. Altogether, the Copperheads offer a balanced and memorable summer where athletes build friendships, strengthen skills, and feel fully integrated into the community.
Each player must be on a college baseball roster for the school season following the Copperheads’ season. Each player must have at least one year of college baseball eligibility remaining.
Seasons are 38-42 games long, spanning June and July. The team plays 5-6 times per week during the season, usually in the evenings. Player safety and avoidance of overuse injuries is paramount.
Team travel is required between games, but the schedule is built to minimize time spent traveling. Other teams’ fields average less than 3 hours away. Travel to away games is provided by the Copperheads.
Copperheads players are unpaid in order to maintain their NCAA eligibility. There is a fee to participate in the league.
Unlike most other summer collegiate teams, Copperheads players do not live with host families. Our players live with their teammates at a local fraternity house, in exchange for promotional consideration with the Copperheads.
All Copperhead players are fed before away games, and after both home and away games. In addition, players will receive ten additional meals each month to accommodate for days with no games.
The Copperheads begin the recruitment process in the fall prior to the upcoming season. The coaching staff will work to construct the roster until the team is full, which typically takes place from March to May, but varies. Please do not hesitate to express interest in playing for the Copperheads.
